Sonnets
Gods
The final day has come, the end of all
When every man recalls his day of sin
There is no god to harry those who crawl
But that which is the god that lives within
So tremble ye in fear! and crouch in awe
Before the sight of you, in mirror seen
For after sun’s last journey, you’re the law
You pardon not the sinner you have been
The moon and sun and stars have all turned dark
And even darkness now is turned to naught
You lived as gods, like gods you left a mark
Which even now is gone, though dearly bought
Show mercy to yourselves, forget the past
What Drew Me
And so my heart will live on in the waves
For I have lost the strength I need to sin
And that which dooms and that which sometimes saves
Will make the path my soul must journey in
My struggle therefore fails - I fear to win
So am I now intentionally lost
The gift of life rewards those men who sin
That gift to those who win no mind to cost
This vessel I am in is turned and tossed
The roar of thunder breaks the rush of wind
My doom is thus forever to be lost
My triumph thus to never more have sinned
Who knows the name of that which keeps me here
The Keepers
Before the sun and stars and moon and light
Are darkened, and the clouds return the rain
And those who look through windows find their sight
As dark as night, and so it shall remain
Recall my words to thee, my child dear
When all the keepers of the house do shake
The strong men bow themselves in aweful fear
And shut their doors, so that they need not wake
Then one of you will start at sound of birds
And music’s daughters all will fade from view
Cold silence taking place of vibrant words
We try and fail to sing the songs we knew
All men will thus betray me, not by deed
Our Nero
We watched our pride fall heavy to the ground
And in our rage we caged it to its place
Our ears were filled with cries and static sound
We made a monster so we could give chase
We thought we’d learned our lesson from the red
We taught our children how we’d chosen wrong
But when the last act’s done and last word said
We knew that we were lying all along
So in the end what shall we know but fire?
We gave our Nero license us to burn
And as we push the boulder ever higher
Can we forget it always must return?
We watched in silence, and in silence fell
